The first time I heard Vã Revelação, Bruna Black’s voice curved around the corners of the house like sunlight through slatted blinds. It stopped me. And then it pulled me in.
Vã Revelação feels like an intimate gathering of Brazil’s rhythmic heritage, filtered through the refined ear of composer John Finbury and illuminated by Black’s chameleonic vocal talent. Each song is an enticing musical postcard, stamped with Brazilian genres such as bossa nova, baião, partido alto, forró, afoxê, and of course, samba.
Finbury, now fully immersed in Brazilian idioms after a long and winding journey through jazz, pop, and film music, writes with the wisdom of someone who listens more than he speaks. His compositions respect, converse, and elevate. The arrangements are supple and clean, carried by world-class musicians.
Ultimately, this is an album of deep artistry, cross-cultural fluency, and musical kinship.
